This article presents the hypothesis that as motorized transportation has become common in Africa, even relatively speaking, the vehicle has been transformed into a space-time that, far from being a rupture with sedentary life, has become a part of it. The duration of the journey is time devoted to maintaining the social, familial, and professional space. The use of contemporary communication technologies makes the personalized appropriation of that time and of that space easier, since these technologies have generally become available to the population, even among the poor and in rural areas. They allow for a new means of interacting and communicating during the time when a vehicle is moving; for being, in a way, present, even in the absence of physical proximity between people. First, this article discusses the vehicle as belonging to a spatial whole that is measured out by the individual. It then discusses how the vehicle's space-time is occupied by people and the collectivity. Finally, it emphasizes the limits that the development of this particular space-time faces when it is, in principle, unconstrained. The strengthening of control over the space-time that the moving vehicle represents brings into question individuals' freedom to place themselves to varying extents on the margins of the social space.
