Newly built sewage farms in the north of Senegal, near the town of Saint-Louis and Louga have proved to be very attractive to Little Greves : there was always more than 50% of those counted during wetland censuses between October and July, and more than 80% for eight of these months. Previous censuses didn't focus on grebes, so there is no proof of increase, although this seems likely. Black-necked Grebe were observed only once in Senegal before their discovery at Saint-Louis sewage farm in 1990. Since then it has been found regularly there between November and February, numbers varying between 25 and 34. The site has become less used with time, especially because of human disturbance, but Black-necked Grebe have since been found in equivalent numbers on a lake at Guiers and a lagoon in Mauritania.
