Samples collected from 1977-1981 by RV "Sonne" and "Valdivia" appear to confirm that the Red Sea contains only three species of peneid shrimps in deep water. All three are endemic. Two of them, Parapenaeus fissuroides erythraeus and Metapenaeopsis erythraea, have close relatives in the Indo-West-Pacific but the third, Pleoticus steindachneri, belongs to a genus found elsewhere only in the West Atlantic. The taxonomic characters of the latter are partly redescribed and discussed. The high temperature of the deep water of the Red Sea explains the composition and the depth distribution of the Peneid shrimp populations. (Résumé d'auteur)
