Small-scale fisheries are very active along the Mediterranean coast and often present many difficulties for scientific description. The main constraints arise from the great diversity of techniques, of populations of fishermen, and of a target species, and also from the wide variability in fishing activities and catches, especially in the case of lagoon and shellfish fisheries for which no real legislation or control exists. Consequently the study of such small-scale fisheries requires an appropriate sampling strategy together with a direct collaboration with the whole profession in order to estimate more precisely catches and activities.
