  abstract = {{S}mall-scale fisheries are very active along the {M}editerranean coast and often present many difficulties for scientific description. {T}he main constraints arise from the great diversity of techniques, of populations of fishermen, and of a target species, and also from the wide variability in fishing activities and catches, especially in the case of lagoon and shellfish fisheries for which no real legislation or control exists. {C}onsequently the study of such small-scale fisheries requires an appropriate sampling strategy together with a direct collaboration with the whole profession in order to estimate more precisely catches and activities.
