The fact that the notion of landscape appeared in two particular civilizations - China since the 4th century, then Europe since the Rennaissance - compels one to characterize all the other civilizations as lacking this notion, i.e. negatively. Yet these civilizations had in common a capacity which modernity tended to erase in Western civilization, that is to situate human existence in a cosmic order which manifests itself in the environment. The concept of cosmophany is proposed here in order to acknowledge this capacity. (Résumé d'auteur)
