  abstract = {{T}he fact that the notion of landscape appeared in two particular civilizations - {C}hina since the 4th century, then {E}urope since the {R}ennaissance - compels one to characterize all the other civilizations as lacking this notion, i.e. negatively. {Y}et these civilizations had in common a capacity which modernity tended to erase in {W}estern civilization, that is to situate human existence in a cosmic order which manifests itself in the environment. {T}he concept of cosmophany is proposed here in order to acknowledge this capacity.
