@article{fdi:42797, title = {{F}reshwater fish zoogeography in {W}est {A}frica : faunal similarities between river basins}, author = {{H}ugueny, {B}ernard and {L}{\'e}v{\^e}que, {C}hristian}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}imilarities between the freshwater fish faunas of 52 {W}est {A}frican rivers have been investigated and three main zoogeographic regions recognized. {T}he {S}udanian region includes all rivers from {S}enegal to the {O}mo, as well as coastal basins from {I}vory {C}oast to the {C}ross and the {W}ouri. {T}he upper {G}uinean region comprises the coastal basins from {G}uinea to {L}iberia and the {L}ower {G}uinean one, the coastal rivers of {C}ameroon and {G}aboon. {T}he {S}udanian region can be sub-divided into a {S}udanian region sensu stricto, including the {S}ahelo-{S}udanese rivers, and the {E}burneo-{G}hanean region corresponding to coastal basins from the {C}ess (or {N}ipou{\'e}, {I}vory {C}oast) to the {P}ra ({G}hana). {T}hese delimitations give an highly significant within region faunal homogeneity, even if the effect of geographical proximity between rivers is removed. 21 to 71% of the fish species in each regions are endemics. {T}he present patterns of distribution are the result of past climatic and geological events affecting {W}est {A}frica and, given this framework, the role of alternating wet and dry periods during the early quaternary is emphasized as well as the importance of mountains as dispersal barriers. {R}ole of recent river connections and links via lagoon is emphasized in explaining river faunal similarities within biogeographical regions.
