  abstract = {{S}mall-scale marine fisheries in the {C}{\^o}te d'{I}voire are at present in the hands of {G}hanaian fishermen ({F}ante and {E}we tribes), who have a long-established tradition as seafarerers. in order to understand this situation, we have examined the historical processes leading to this {G}hanaian "dynamism". {S}tudy of the timing of the expansionist movement of {G}hanaian fishermen shows that the {F}ante and {E}we have developed different strategies, which help explain the logic of the phenomena of permanent settlement and technological change. {T}he historical approach leads to a study of social relationships.
