  abstract = {{T}he multispecific small-scale fisheries in the {C}anaries are diversified in therms of fishing gear. {T}he varied origins of fishermen is the principal cause for this diversity. {T}echnological and biological interactions, together with the seasonality of fishing techniques drive the dynamics of such diversity. {I}n 1987, the artisanal sector included 1765 boats, producing 2000 million pesetas for 4500 families. {T}he artisanal fleet is highly diversified and old-fashioned. {T}una and coastal pelagic species fisheries are the most important.
