@article{fdi:35009, title = {{I}ndian lands, environmental policy and military geopolitics in the development of the brazilian {A}mazon : the case of the {Y}anomami}, author = {{A}lbert, {B}ruce}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}his article examines the realignments of the developmentalist discourse and strategy of the {B}razilian military for the {A}mazon during the civilian government of the "{N}ew {R}epublic" (1985-90). {I}t focuses on a case study, i.e. the official expropriation of the lands of the {Y}anomami {I}ndians in the states of {R}oraima and {A}mazonas along the {B}razil/{V}enezuela border. {T}he analysis brings to light how, during this period, the military aimed at neutralizing both the pressure of environmental {NGO}s on {B}razil's international creditors and the emergent democratization of decisions on land use in {A}maz{\^o}nia. {I}t shows how such attempts involved manipulating environmental legislation and ecological rhetoric in order to perpetuate militazy hegemony over the development of {A}maz{\^o}nia to the manoeuvres to a geopolitical and economical model for {A}mazonian integration still inspired by the national security doctrine drawn up in the 1950s and 1960s by the {E}scola {S}uperior de {G}uerra.
