Hamelin Philippe auteur aut IRD text bookSection fre text/pdf reformatted digital access In the absence of field work and the possibility to survey local knowledge, the settlement scheme linked to the opening of the Transamazon Highway in 1970 was planned in relation to political policy. One of the principal objectives was the formation of a middle class composed of farmers to cultivate foodstuffs. The idea for an exclusive formation of a middle class was then taken up and amplified by the Catholic Church, which, through the organization of its "base communities", tried to achieve its egalitarian utopia. But a refusal to be egalitarian yet poor was to bring about a transformation of the production system. It was originally dominated by foodstuffs, but now is dominated by plantations, cocoa, pepper, coffe... The study of the evolution and the breakdowns which brought this transformation about shows that if certain socio-economic conditions were respected, even a society that has been accultured and shaken by migration, will maintain its potential for adapting to new conditions of production.
