@inproceedings{fdi:31756, title = {{I}nfluence of {S}outhern oscillation on {N}ew {Z}ealand weather}, author = {{M}ullan, {B}.{A}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {S}outhern {O}scillation is known to have a significant effect on {N}ew {Z}ealand weather. {I}n general, during the negative ({E}l {N}ino) phase of the {O}scillation, {N}ew {Z}ealand experiences an increased frequency of cold southwesterly airstreams that result in more rain in the {S}outhwest of the country, and dry conditions in the {N}orth and {E}ast. {D}uring the positive ({L}a {N}ina) phase, there is a tendency for increased cyclonic activity in the {N}orth {T}asman and more slow-moving or blocking anticyclones to the southeast of {N}ew {Z}ealand. {T}his results in frequent warm moist northerly or northeasterly airstreams over the country, with warmer than normal temperatures nation wide and wetter conditions in parts of the {N}orth {I}sland exposed to these prevailing winds. {T}he pressure anomalies in the {N}ew {Z}ealand region associated with extremes of the {S}outhern {O}scillation {I}ndex show some seasonal variation. {T}he anomalies are also not entirerly linear with respect to the value of the {SOI}. {T}his paper examines differences between {E}l {N}ino and {L}a {N}ina conditions as their affect {N}ew {Z}ealand, and then discusses the predicted and observed anomalies in {N}ew {Z}ealand weather associated with the 1988/89 {L}a {N}ina episode.
