In the presence of a steady westward wind stress, diurnal variation of the surface buoyancy flux triggers dynamic instabilities that "ripple" downward (order 100 m) during the night into the pycnocline above the undercurrent core, causing a strong diurnal cycle in dissipation and in the depth of penetration of the turbulent fluxes into the upper 100-150 meters of the water column.
