In the circumstances of rapid development of some African fisheries, it may be difficult to meet the data requirements of realistic assessment models. Consideration is given to alternative approaches that account for the effects of ecological succession, diversity, stability and productivity. There is a compromise between production of a larger number of offspring ('r selection'). Natural selection moulds population size and genetic frequencies of species in various habitats. Hence, derivatives of rates of growth and mortality are vital to the analysis of trends of fish populations. (Résumé d'auteur) %S Travaux et Documents de l'ORSTOM %$ 036EAUCON01
