@article{fdi:010097379, title = {{E}valuation of the effectiveness of a road safety education program implemented in primary schools in {B}ouak{\'e}, {C}{\^o}te d'{I}voire, {W}est {A}frica}, author = {{B}onnet, {E}mmanuel and {I}kpo, {D}. and {K}odo, {M}. and {I}kpo, {S}. and {A}zongnibo, {M}. and {M}onnier, {V}. and {R}idde, {V}al{\'e}ry}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{O}bjective {R}oad traffic injuries are a leading cause of death among children in {A}frica, especially in urban areas with inadequate infrastructure. {D}espite this, few scientifically taught educational initiatives to address this issue at the school level have been implemented in {W}est {A}frica. {M}ethods {T}his quasi-experimental study evaluated a road safety education program conducted in 11 primary schools in {B}ouak{\'e}, {C}{\^o}te d'{I}voire. {T}he initiative targeted 509 students in {G}rade 4 ({CM}1) and was implemented in three formats: (1) printed textbooks, (2) animated videos, and (3) a combined textbook and video approach. {D}ata were collected before and after the intervention using a 59-item questionnaire measuring knowledge, behaviors, and self-efficacy related to road safety. {A} difference-in-differences analysis using generalized linear models targeting the program's effectiveness. {R}esults {D}uring the 7 month study period, a decrease in the number of crashes involving students was observed near the intervention schools. {T}he combined textbook and video group achieved the greatest improvement across most outcomes, including road sign knowledge (+200%) and safe crossing behaviors. {T}he textbook-only group also generated significant gains. {T}he video-only group had limited impact. {N}o significant change was found in self-efficacy. {C}onclusion {A} hybrid educational intervention using printed and audio-visual materials improved road safety knowledge and behaviors among primary school children in an urban {A}frican setting. {T}hese results support the integration of context-adapted, multimodal road safety programs into national education strategies.}, keywords = {{R}oad safety education ; school-based intervention ; quasi-experimental ; evaluation ; low- and middle-income countries ; {COTE} {D}'{IVOIRE} ; {BOUAKE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{T}raffic {I}njury {P}revention}, volume = {[{E}arly access]}, numero = {}, pages = {[9 p.]}, ISSN = {1538-9588}, year = {2026}, DOI = {10.1080/15389588.2026.2638537}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010097379}, }
