  abstract = {{A} retrospective examination of historical mosquito collections held at the {I}nstitut de {R}echerche pour le {D} & eacute;veloppement ({IRD}, {F}rance) and the {I}nstitut {L}ouis-{M}alard & eacute; ({ILM}, {T}ahiti, {F}rench {P}olynesia) revealed evidence of {A}edes nocturnus on the island of {T}ahiti dating back as early as 1993. {T}his historical detection was corroborated by targeted field surveys conducted between 2023 and 2025, which confirmed the species' presence at multiple sites, particularly in the southern part of the island. {T}o support these observations, {COI} sequences from newly collected specimens were analyzed. {A}lthough recent work favors recognizing {A}e. nocturnus as a distinct species, it has historically been treated as a synonym or geographic subspecies of {A}e. vexans. {C}onsequently, the {T}ahitian sequences were compared with {A}e. vexans sensu lato sequences from {G}en{B}ank, as no {A}e. nocturnus sensu stricto sequences were available. {T}he {T}ahitian specimens clustered within the {P}acific group of {A}e. vexans, in a sub-group represented by {S}outh {P}acific islands, including {N}ew {C}aledonia and {M}oorea, one of the {S}ociety {I}slands. {T}his study provides the first confirmed record of {A}e. nocturnus on {T}ahiti, based on both morphological identification and molecular evidence. {T}he findings underscore the need to integrate molecular tools into entomological monitoring to improve species detection and prevent misidentifications in island environments where vector diversity is often underestimated.},
