@article{fdi:010097190, title = {{S}ocio-economic and zootechnical characteristics of fish farming in the {M}wenga territory ({S}outh {K}ivu) in the {D}emocratic {R}epublic of {C}ongo}, author = {{M}uganza {M}usombwa, {R}. and {I}sumbisho {M}wapu, {P}. and {R}odrique {L}ugendo, {A}. and {L}usasi {S}wana, {W}. and {N}aminata, {K}. and {A}tangana {K}enfack, {J}.{A}. and {C}odjo, {V}. and {W}ikondi, {J}. and {M}ukumbi {K}atanda, {Z}. and {B}rehmer, {P}atrice and {M}asilya {M}ulungula, {P}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{D}uring the {B}elgian colonial period (1950-1960), fish farming in the {D}emocratic {R}epublic of {C}ongo ({DRC}) experienced a spectacular boom, producing nearly 1, 000 tonnes of marketable fish per year and 10, 000 tonnes of fry for 15, 000 fish farmers before the 1960s. {A}fter the country's independence, fish farming had declined sharply, with yields no more than 2.5 t ha -1 per year in rural areas, or even a general abandonment almost across the entire {DRC}. {T}his study was conducted from {M}arch 30 to {D}ecember 30, 2023, using a survey questionnaire, interviews, direct observations, and documentation. {I}ts main objective was to analyze the socio-economic and zootechnical characteristics of fish farming in the {B}isitabyale {G}rouping in the {M}wenga {T}erritory, {S}outh {K}ivu {P}rovince, {DRC}. {A} total of 100 fish farmers were surveyed, either at their fish farms or within their households. {A}fter data collection, the data were processed using {E}xcel and transferred to {S}tatistical {P}ackage for the {S}ocial {S}ciences ({SPSS}) software for descriptive analysis. {T}he results reveal that fish farming is exclusively practiced by men, with one-third of the farmers aged between 29 and 39, the majority of whom are married. {M}ost of them have only a primary school education. {A} large majority of fish farmers (65%) are agricultural workers; 96% of fish farmers raise fish for economic reasons; 93% have not received any training in fish farming techniques; 72% own reservoir ponds. {N}one of the farmers feed their fish or fertilize their ponds. {A}ll practice extensive farming and use a mixed stocking method. {A}ll fish farmers obtain their fingerlings from others. {F}inally, the majority face a lack of government support services and/or training in fish farming techniques.}, keywords = {{REPUBLIQUE} {DEMOCRATIQUE} {DU} {CONGO} ; {MWENGA} {KIVU}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}nternational {J}ournal of {F}isheries and {A}quatic {S}tudies}, volume = {14}, numero = {1}, pages = {06--15}, ISSN = {2394-0506}, year = {2026}, DOI = {10.22271/fish.2026.v14.i1a.3200}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010097190}, }
