@article{fdi:010096947, title = {{S}eismic stratigraphy of the peruvian forearc drifts from 3° to 7°{S} : identification and influence of lower layers of the {H}umboldt {C}urrent {S}ystem}, author = {{C}alv{\`e}s, {G}. and {B}russet, {S}. and {C}alderon, {Y}. and {B}aby, {P}atrice and {C}lift, {P}. {D}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he seafloor morphology and subsurface geometry of a late {N}eogene contourite drift located along the {P}eru margin is documented for the first time using multibeam bathymetry, two-dimensional and three-dimensional seismic data. {A}long the margin several submarine canyons incise the shelf and slope. {B}etween these canyons, interfluves are characterized by the occurrence of undulating sediment waves and mounded features. {W}e quantify these features to understand the processes that could have caused their formation. {T}his analysis allows us to define a contourite depositional system, present between 70 and 4,280 m water depth, and to relate it to the main oceanographic currents acting in the study area. {T}he {H}umboldt {C}urrent is a key element in shaping the margin, and resulted in various processes related to bottom currents, ranging from erosion to deposition. {W}e propose that the {H}umboldt {C}urrent {S}ystem intensified at similar to 10 {M}a based on age calibrated hiatuses and sedimentation trends of the eastern {P}acific {O}cean. {T}he initiation of the {H}umboldt {C}urrent {S}ystem marks a prominent erosion surface on the continental slope. {T}his surface is also observed in the {T}alara {B}asin associated to the uplift driven by subduction of the {I}nca {P}lateau. {T}he identification of this contourite sequence has implications for the understanding of this active margin (e.g., sediment distribution and winnowing) and in the structural geology (unloading of tectonic structures by seafloor erosion) of its forearc basins. {T}his also implies an external control that could be climatic over the pace of ocean currents, particularly in strength and depth.}, keywords = {contourite ; reflection seismic ; bottom current ; humboldt current system ; {P}eru margin ; paleoceanography ; {PACIFIQUE} ; {HUMBOLDT} {COURANT}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}aleoceanography and {P}aleoclimatology}, volume = {41}, numero = {4}, pages = {e2026{PA}005433 [27 p.]}, ISSN = {2572-4517}, year = {2026}, DOI = {10.1029/2026pa005433}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010096947}, }
