@article{fdi:010096059, title = {{P}rotected areas influence fire regimes globally}, author = {{C}ardil, {A}. and {R}odrigues, {M}. and {A}scoli, {D}. and {O}rtega, {M}. and {Q}uiñones, {T}. and {E}rdozain, {M}. and {M}enor, {I}. {O}. and {S}padoni, {G}. {L}. and {R}amírez, {J}. and {M}olina, {J}. {R}. and {M}ouillot, {F}lorent and {S}ilva, {C}. {A}. and {M}ohan, {M}. and {M}artínez-{B}entu{\'e}, {C}. and de-{M}iguel, {S}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{P}rotected areas ({PA}s) aim to support global conservation efforts including the maintenance of fire regimes and mitigation of negative fire impacts. {A}nalyzing data from over 20 million fires worldwide, we found that {PA}s, along with the various protection levels defined by the {I}nternational {U}nion for {C}onservation of {N}ature ({IUCN}), significantly influenced burned area ({BA}) and fire regime attributes across continents and biomes in distinct ways, with varying impacts on fire size, spread, intensity, and duration. {I}n most biomes, the proportion of {BA} within {PA}s was smaller than the proportion of {PA} itself, indicating that {PA}s were generally less impacted by wildfires. {H}owever, in tropical grasslands, tropical dry broadleaf forests and temperate conifer forests, the {BA} fraction inside {PA}s was larger. {T}he strictest {IUCN} protection categories ({I}a and {I}b) were associated with the lowest {BA}, compared to {N}ational {P}arks ({IUCN} {II}) and other less restrictive protection categories. {H}owever, this pattern varied by biome, with mediterranean forests, temperate broadleaf and mixed forests, temperate grasslands and tropical coniferous forests showing increased fire proneness in the strictest {IUCN} categories and more intense fires. {I}nsights from this research can guide targeted environmental policies to strengthen {PA} networks to maintain fire regimes.}, keywords = {{W}ildfires ; {P}rotected areas ; {F}ire behavior ; {V}egetation types ; {B}iomes ; {E}arth ; {F}ire and environmental management ; {MONDE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {E}nvironmental {M}anagement}, volume = {398}, numero = {}, pages = {128285 [12 p.]}, ISSN = {0301-4797}, year = {2026}, DOI = {10.1016/j.jenvman.2025.128285}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010096059}, }
