@article{fdi:010095556, title = {{P}lant evidence of environmental and hydrological changes in {V}ichama, {P}eru (1800-1500 {BCE})}, author = {{Y}seki, {M}. and {M}orales, {C}. {R}. and {C}rispin, {A}. and {A}bad, {T}. and {P}rado, {A}. and {Z}uñiga, {A}. and {M}achacuay, {M}. and {T}urcq, {B}runo and {C}arr{\'e}, {M}. and {N}ovoa, {P}. and {S}hady, {R}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{R}econstructing past climatic fluctuations and their impact on human subsistence is essential for understanding long-term resilience and adaptation strategies. {T}his study reconstructs past vegetation and environmental changes at {V}ichama (1800-1500 {BCE}), a pre-{H}ispanic agro-fishing settlement on {P}eru's north-central coast. {O}ur results indicate that the clay used in the preparation of floor mortars was collected from nearby wetlands. {P}ollen analysis of mortars spanning six architectural periods ({P}1 to {P}6) reveals a major shift in coastal wetland vegetation. {D}uring {P}1, {P}2, and {P}6, pollen assemblages were dominated by hydrophilic wetland taxa, primarily sedges and cattails (41.4-90.5 %), indicating humid conditions. {I}n contrast, {P}3 to {P}5 show a sharp decline in these taxa (4.8-32.8 %) alongside a significant increase in wild {P}oaceae pollen (45.5-90.2 %), reflecting a transition to drier and more saline conditions. {P}ollen data also support the use of these wetlands for cultivation, underscoring their strategic role in local subsistence practices. {T}he relative chronology of {P}4 and {P}5, the periods with the strongest signal of aridity in our pollen record, places them between similar to 1650 and 1550 {BCE}. {T}his timing coincides with evidence of droughts in the {A}ndes, suggesting that reduced precipitation in the upper watershed led to lower river discharge, diminished groundwater infiltration, and the contraction of wetlands near {V}ichama. {T}hese drier conditions correspond with agricultural stress indicators, such as smaller guava seeds and reduced crop richness, and may also be reflected in {V}ichama's friezes depicting famine and social distress.}, keywords = {{V}ichama ; {P}aleoenvironmental ; {P}ollen ; {A}rchaeology ; {P}eru ; {PEROU}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {A}rchaeological {S}cience : {R}eports}, volume = {68}, numero = {}, pages = {105473 [9 p.]}, ISSN = {2352-409{X}}, year = {2025}, DOI = {10.1016/j.jasrep.2025.105473}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010095556}, }
