@article{fdi:010095505, title = {{A} species diversity assessment of the genus {C}aulerpa ({B}ryopsidales) in the {C}entral {I}ndo-{P}acific marine realm based on tuf{A} {DNA} sequences}, author = {{D}raisma, {S}. {G}. {A}. and {S}auvage, {T}. and {L}agourgue, {L}. and {K}ato, {A}. and {D}umilag, {R}. {V}. and {L}im, {P}. {E}. and {Z}ubia, {M}. and {P}ayri, {C}laude}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he green algal genus {C}aulerpa is known for high levels of morphological plasticity and cryptic diversity, rendering morphology-based identifications unreliable. {T}he present study assessed the {C}aulerpa species diversity in the {C}entral {I}ndo-{P}acific realm ({CIP}) using tuf{A} {DNA} barcodes. {A} phylogenetic tree was constructed from 700 tuf{A} sequences from the {CIP} supplemented with sequences from a reference sequence library. {M}ost species were monophyletic, but in a few cases species delimitation was contentious. {T}he subgenera {A}raucarioideae, {C}aulerpella, and {C}haroideae were represented by, respectively, one, four, and four species in the {CIP}, including cryptic species. {T}he subgenus {C}aulerpa section {S}edoideae was represented by at least nine species, including a dark taxon (a genetically distinct specimen that cannot be linked to a formally described species) resembling {C}. microphysa. {O}ther specimens, originally identified as {C}. microphysa, were all assigned to two {C}. lentillifera subclades that may represent two cryptic species. {S}ubgenus {C}aulerpa section {C}aulerpa was represented by at least 27 species, including two dark taxa. {C}aulerpa macra and {C}. macrodisca could each represent two distinct species, whereas {C}. manorensis could not be distinguished from one of the {C}. macra subclades based on tuf{A}. {T}he tuf{A} barcode is a powerful tool to assist in {C}aulerpa species identification. {H}owever, for some taxa an additional marker is recommended for reliable identification. {B}ased on tuf{A}, we arrived at a conservative count of 45 {C}aulerpa species within the {CIP}. {N}ew {C}aulerpa records were reported for several countries.}, keywords = {{C}ryptic species ; {DNA} barcoding ; {M}orphological plasticity ; {S}pecies complex ; {S}pecies delimitation ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN} ; {PACIFIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}hycologia}, volume = {[{E}arly access]}, numero = {}, pages = {[22 p.]}, ISSN = {0031-8884}, year = {2025}, DOI = {10.1080/00318884.2025.2575521}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010095505}, }
