@article{fdi:010095342, title = {{D}issolved iron distribution and budget in the {S}olomon {S}ea}, author = {{S}arthou, {G}. and {B}ucciarelli, {E}. and {Q}u{\'e}rou{\'e}, {F}. and {L}acan, {F}. and {P}lanquette, {H}. and {P}ham, {V}. {Q}. and {G}rand, {M}. and {P}radoux, {C}. and {R}odier, {M}artine and {B}onnet, {S}ophie and {E}ldin, {G}{\'e}rard and {C}ravatte, {S}ophie and {J}eandel, {C}. and {G}anachaud, {A}lexandre}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A}s part of the {PANDORA} cruise ({GEOTRACES} {GP}12), concentrations of dissolved iron (d{F}e) were measured at 11 stations inside and outside the {S}olomon {S}ea, a semi-enclosed sea in the western tropical {P}acific, with complex topography and straits, and strong western boundary currents supplying the equatorial current system. {T}hese measurements aimed to better assess the various sources of d{F}e in our study area and the {S}olomon {S}ea's potential as a source of d{F}e for the {E}quatorial {U}ndercurrent ({EUC}). {A} simple box model allows calculating and discussing the fate of the d{F}e in the different water layers flowing through the {S}olomon {S}ea and suggests that the amount of d{F}e enrichment within the enclosed sea was not significant for the lower thermocline and intermediate waters, indicating that most of the d{F}e was acquired prior to reaching the {S}olomon {S}ea at the entrance and/or that inputs are approximately balanced by scavenging within the basin for these two layers. {I}n contrast, d{F}e enrichment was significant for the upper thermocline layer and the deep waters, highlighting enrichments from external sources, as well as combination of internal processes, such as scavenging and/or organic complexation. {T}he relative d{F}e contribution of the {S}olomon {S}ea to {EUC} was 20 %, on average. {O}ther sources might thus provide d{F}e to the {EUC}, along the water transport downstream of the {S}olomon {S}ea (e.g. {B}ismarck {S}ea) or from the northern hemisphere. {D}iazotrophs such as {T}richodesmium might also contribute to the d{F}e enrichment of the {EUC} after export and remineralization at depth outside the {S}olomon {S}ea.}, keywords = {{D}issolved iron ; {S}olomon {S}ea ; {W}estern tropical {P}acific ; {E}quatorial undercurrent ; {GEOTRACES} ; {PACIFIQUE} ; {SALOMON} {MER} ; {ZONE} {TROPICALE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}arine {C}hemistry}, volume = {273}, numero = {}, pages = {104567 [12 p.]}, ISSN = {0304-4203}, year = {2025}, DOI = {10.1016/j.marchem.2025.104567}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010095342}, }
