@article{fdi:010094990, title = {{O}ffshore record of explosive volcanic eruptions in the southern part of the {P}anamá {B}asin during the past 10 {M}yr : 1. {T}ephrostratigraphy, cross-correlations and geochemical characterization}, author = {{B}ablon, {M}athilde and {S}aillard, {M}arianne and {M}ichaud, {F}. and {N}auret, {F}. and {S}amaniego, {P}ablo and {L}e {P}ennec, {J}ean-{L}uc and {H}idalgo, {S}. and {R}atzov, {G}. and {D}evidal, {J}. {L}. and {O}range, {F}. and {L}iorzou, {C}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{N}orthern {A}ndean volcanism is characterized by an intense {Q}uaternary activity, whose onshore deposits have partly covered {M}io-{P}liocene products associated with the early development of the arc, making it difficult to obtain an exhaustive catalog of past eruptions. {T}o improve our knowledge of the largest eruptions that occurred in the {N}orthern {A}ndean arc, we analyzed several cores from drilling sites off {E}cuador to seek tephra records. {W}e characterize for the first time the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of tephra beds recorded in the southern part of the {P}anama {B}asin in the sediments of {DSDP} and {ODP} drilling {S}ites 504, 677, 678, 1238, 1239 and 1240. {W}e show that products of at least 27 major eruptions from the {N}orthern {A}ndes have reached the {P}acific {O}cean since the {E}arly {P}liocene, and we have correlated 11 of them between several drilling sites. {P}roducts of the oldest volcanism had mainly rhyolitic compositions belonging to a {H}igh-{K} calc-alkaline magmatic series, whereas magmas display more heterogeneous {S}i{O}2 and {K}2{O} contents from the beginning of the {P}leistocene. {C}orrelations established in this work allow us to provide new temporal constraints to age models of sedimentary sequences of {S}ites 677, 1238 and 1240 constructed based on biostratigraphy. {I}n addition, we show that sediments of {ODP} {S}ite 1240, the closest to the {G}alapagos islands, recorded several {P}leistocene rhyolitic eruptions associated with the hotspot's activity, possibly revealing past oceanic ridge-hotspot interactions.}, keywords = {tephrochronology ; geochemistry ; integrated ocean drilling program ; northern {A}ndean arc ; {G}alapagos ; major eruptions ; {EQUATEUR} ; {PACIFIQUE} ; {ANDES} ; {GALAPAGOS} ; {PANAMA} {BASSIN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{G}eochemistry {G}eophysics {G}eosystems}, volume = {26}, numero = {9}, pages = {e2025{GC}012276 [34 p.]}, year = {2025}, DOI = {10.1029/2025gc012276}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010094990}, }
