@article{fdi:010094944, title = {{B}ack to the source : connecting the seismological observations of {L}e {T}eil earthquake ({M}w 4.9, 2019/11/11, {F}rance) to the local geology}, author = {{G}odano, {M}. and {L}arroque, {C}. and {D}elouis, {B}. and {A}mpuero, {J}ean-{P}aul and {A}rzu, {F}. and {C}ourboulex, {F}. and {D}eschamps, {A}. and van den {E}nde, {M}. and {B}aize, {S}. and {R}itz, {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he spatial distribution of seismicity in active fault zones depends primarily on the geometry of the fault networks. {H}owever, recent advances suggest that seismic activity may also be controlled by the rheology of the geological units surrounding fault zones. {I}n the present work, we use seismological and geological analyses to investigate the influence of the local geology on the rupture nucleation and propagation of the 2019 {L}e {T}eil earthquake ({F}rance; {ML} = 5.4; {M}w = 4.9) and on the distribution of its aftershocks. {T}he kinematic rupture model of the mainshock, obtained by joint inversion of seismological and {INSAR} data, shows that the rupture nucleated at 1 km depth and propagated mainly up-dip and bilaterally. {T}emplate matching detection identifies 115 aftershocks (-1.6 <= {ML} <= 2.5) in the two months following the mainshock. {D}ouble difference location shows that the aftershocks delineate a 4 km-long {NE}-{SW} plane with a 60 degrees dip to the {SE}, consistent with the extent and the geometry of the {L}a {R}ouvi{\`e}re fault activated during the mainshock. {B}y placing the seismicity in the local geological context, we conclude that the seismic activity was largely controlled by the rheological properties of the contrasting lithology. {T}he mainshock nucleated in marly-limestone, but the coseismic slip was maximum above 0.6 km depth in a massive limestone more prompt to store elastic strain. {T}he aftershocks occurred mainly in marls and marly limestone. {T}hey are interpreted as ruptures in competent beds of limestones of varying thickness, interbedded with marls.}, keywords = {{FRANCE} ; {LE} {TEIL}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {G}eophysical {R}esearch : {S}olid {E}arth}, volume = {130}, numero = {9}, pages = {e2025{JB}031133 [17 p.]}, ISSN = {2169-9313}, year = {2025}, DOI = {10.1029/2025jb031133}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010094944}, }
