@article{fdi:010094888, title = {{F}ield productivity of sorghum and cowpea intercropping is increased by combining farm-made beneficial microorganisms with compost}, author = {{Z}insou, {A}. and {F}ernandes, {P}. and {T}raor{\'e}, {I}. and {B}eaulieu, {H}. and {S}amba, {R}. {T}. and {A}ssigbets{\'e}, {K}omi}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{F}arm-made {B}eneficial {M}icroorganisms ({FBM}), derived from forest litter, are an alternative to commercially available effective microorganisms. {W}hile initial field observations have been promising, scientific validation is required to confirm their effectiveness. {A} two-year study was conducted in {B}urkina {F}aso to evaluate the effects of {FBM} on soil microbial biomass and the response of sorghum ({S}orghum bicolor {L}.) and cowpea ({V}igna unguiculata {L}.). {S}ix practices were assessed: (i) {C}ontrol (no fertilization), (ii) {F}oliar spraying of {FBM} ({FSW}), (iii) {S}imple compost ({SC}), (iv) {S}imple compost with foliar {FBM} ({SC} + {FSW}), (v) {FBM}-enriched compost ({EC}), and (vi) {E}nriched compost with foliar spraying of {FBM} ({EC} + {FSW}). {C}rop growth and yield were recorded, and soil microbial biomass was measured using the phospholipid fatty acid ({PLFA}) method. {T}he lowest total microbial biomass was found in the untreated and {FSW} plots in both the years. {A}mong microbial groups, only gram-positive soil bacteria were unaffected by the treatments. {T}he combination of compost with {FBM} significantly improved both crop growth and yield, with compost making the largest contribution. {I}n conclusion, the study demonstrated that foliar application of {FBM} alone is less effective than when combined with compost.}, keywords = {{E}nriched compost ; fermented forest litter ; microbial biomass ; microbial communities ; {PLFA}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {C}rop {I}mprovement}, volume = {[{E}arly access]}, numero = {}, pages = {[18 p.]}, ISSN = {1542-7528}, year = {2025}, DOI = {10.1080/15427528.2025.2539679}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010094888}, }
