  abstract = {{T}he goby genus {O}xyurichthys ({G}obionellinae) currently comprises 21 recognized species distributed across the tropical {I}ndo-{W}est {P}acific region, with 12 species inhabiting the {W}estern {I}ndian {O}cean ({WIO}). {A} recent examination of specimens from a mudflat habitat in northern {O}man, located in the northwestern {I}ndian {O}cean, led to the description of a new species, {O}xyurichthys omanensis. {I}n this study, we re-examined collections of {O}xyurichthys specimens from the central and southern {WIO}, previously identified as {O}. ophthalmonema. {O}ur results provide robust evidence for the presence of {O}. omanensis in these regions, specifically from {K}enya, {M}ayotte, and {M}adagascar. {H}ere, we present a detailed morphological assessment of genotyped voucher specimens, enhanced by comprehensive descriptive information to further clarify the identification and distribution of {O}xyurichthys species in the central and southern {WIO}.},
