@article{fdi:010094403, title = {{G}lobal patterns and drivers of untracked industrial fishing in coastal marine protected areas}, author = {{S}eguin, {R}. and {L}e {M}anach, {F}. and {D}evillers, {R}odolphe and {V}elez, {L}. and {M}ouillot, {D}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{M}arine protected areas ({MPA}s) are expanding worldwide, but industrial fishing within their boundaries remains poorly understood. {B}y combining vessel {G}lobal {P}ositioning {S}ystem data with satellite imagery, we detected industrial fishing in 47% of coastal {MPA}s worldwide between 2022 and 2024, with two-thirds of vessel detections (67%) untracked by public monitoring. {T}hese untracked vessels were most prevalent (80%) in {MPA}s with the most restrictive management category, which aims to prohibit all extractive activities. {T}he presence and density of fishing vessels were mainly driven by the size and remoteness of {MPA}s rather than their management category itself. {I}ncluding untracked vessels increased estimated fishing effort within {MPA}s by 28%, to an average of 4 hours per square kilometer per year. {T}hese results highlight the continued presence of industrial fishing vessels in {MPA}s and an important gap in our understanding of fishing pressure on protected areas worldwide.}, keywords = {{MONDE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{S}cience}, volume = {389}, numero = {6758}, pages = {396--401}, ISSN = {0036-8075}, year = {2025}, DOI = {10.1126/science.ado9468}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010094403}, }
