@article{fdi:010094294, title = {{S}trategies to engage local communities in forest biodiversity conservation had limited effectiveness in {M}adagascar : lessons from the literature}, author = {{B}lanco, {J}ulien and {R}asambo, {N}. and {D}urand-{B}essart, {C}. and {R}andriamalala, {J}. {R}. and {Q}ueste, {J}. and {B}ecker, {N}. and {S}arron, {J}. and {R}azafimandimby, {H}. and {Z}afitody, {C}. and {C}arri{\`e}re, {S}t{\'e}phanie {M}. and {R}afidison, {V}. {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}o address the current biodiversity crisis, various conservation approaches have been implemented worldwide to engage local communities in biodiversity conservation. {I}n {M}adagascar, a biodiversity hotspot, these approaches include protected areas, community-based conservation, and market-based conservation. {H}owever, their respective ecological, socio-economic, and socio-cultural effectiveness remains poorly understood. {T}his study aimed to fill this knowledge gap through a systematic literature review. {O}ut of 480 publications on forest conservation in {M}adagascar identified through standardized searches and screening, 156 were selected for indepth full-text analysis. {B}y combining quantitative and qualitative approaches, our results revealed generally positive ecological outcomes but negative socio-economic and cultural impacts. {W}hile the literature presents mixed findings on the effectiveness of conservation actions in reducing deforestation, protected forests have demonstrated improved biodiversity outcomes. {H}owever, these ecological gains come at a cost to local communities, especially the poorest households, who often receive inadequate compensation. {A}lternative livelihood activities proposed by conservation programs are often ill-suited to local contexts, and local elites tend to capture most conservation benefits, exacerbating inequalities and local conflicts. {A}ll three conservation approaches display similar trends, indicating recurring challenges regardless of the strategy employed. {T}he literature highlights strategies to achieve more effective conservation while balancing ecological outcomes and human well-being. {T}hese include sustained investment in local conservation actions, genuine co-management frameworks, community empowerment, and stronger collaboration between researchers and local stakeholders. {A}lthough focused on {M}adagascar, the challenges and solutions identified in this study have broader global relevance for biodiversity conservation stakeholders.}, keywords = {{C}onservation paradigms ; {E}nvironmental justice ; {I}mpact assessment ; {H}uman-nature relationships ; {S}tandardized literature review ; {S}ustainability science ; {MADAGASCAR}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}iological {C}onservation}, volume = {309}, numero = {}, pages = {111332 [14 p.]}, ISSN = {0006-3207}, year = {2025}, DOI = {10.1016/j.biocon.2025.111332}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010094294}, }
