@article{fdi:010094281, title = {{R}eview of the noctuid stemborer genus {S}ciomesa ({L}epidoptera : {N}octuidae : {A}pameini : {S}esamiina) : taxonomy, phylogeny and ecology, with the description of 12 new species}, author = {{L}e {R}ΓΌ, {B}runo and {H}{\'e}vin, {N}. {M}. {C}. and {C}apdevielle {D}ulac, {C}laire and {M}usyoka, {B}. {K}. and {C}onlong, {D}. and van den {B}erg, {J}. and {N}demah, {R}. and {L}e {G}all, {P}hilippe and {N}yamukondiwa, {C}. and {P}allangyo, {B}. and {N}jaku, {M}. and {G}oftishu, {M}. and {A}ssefa, {Y}. and {H}aile, {A}. and {C}hipapika, {G}. and {O}ng'amo, {G}. and {C}lamens, {A}. {L}. and {B}arbut, {J}. and {K}ergoat, {G}. {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he genus {S}ciomesa {T}ams & {B}owden ({L}epidoptera: {N}octuidae: {N}octuinae: {A}pameini: {S}esamiina) is a predominantly {A}frotropical group of stemborer moths whose convoluted taxonomic history needs to be clarified. {I}n this study, a comprehensive examination of specimens in collections was carried out in a complementary manner with molecular analyses, resulting in the following changes: (i) 12 new {S}ciomesa species are described: {S}. lalokeli n. sp. and {S}. metiminko n. sp. from {E}thiopia; {S}. elgonensis n. sp., {S}. nigra n. sp. and {S}. simillima n. sp. from {K}enya; {S}. umvoti n. sp. from {S}outh {A}frica; {S}. iboya n. sp., {S}. lilomwi n. sp., {S}. makete n. sp., {S}. njombe n. sp. and {S}. tanganyika n. sp. from {T}anzania; {S}. kalinzu n. sp. from {U}ganda; (ii) four species are reinstated as valid species: three of them, {S}. constantini {L}aporte stat. rev., {S}. etchecopari {L}aporte stat. rev. and {S}. mirifica {L}aporte stat. rev., were previously synonymized with {S}. mesophaea ({H}ampson) while {S}. congitae ({L}aporte) stat. rev. was previously synonymized with {S}. boulardi ({L}aporte); (iii) two species are synonymized: {S}. minuscula ({L}aporte) n. syn., which was previously synonymized with {S}. boulardi, is a synonym of {S}. congitae, and {S}. franciscae {L}aporte n. syn. is a synonym of {S}. mesophaea; (iv) one species, {S}esamia punctipennis {K}r & uuml;ger stat. rev., which was transferred to the {S}ciomesa genus, is removed from the genus {S}ciomesa and temporarily reinstated to the genus {S}esamia {G}uen & eacute;e pending a new combination. {A} supplemental description for 12 previously described species is also provided: {S}. boulardi, {S}. bua {M}oyal et al., {S}. constantini, {S}. etchecopari, {S}. excelsa ({L}aporte), {S}. gnosia {M}oyal et al., {S}. mesophaea, {S}. congitae, {S}. mirifica, {S}. renibifida {B}erio, {S}. scotochroa ({H}ampson) and {S}. venata {F}letcher. {H}ost-plant records are provided for 10 {S}ciomesa species, confirming a pattern of phylogenetic niche conservatism on {P}oales plants in the {C}yperaceae family. {P}hylogenetic and molecular species delimitation analyses were carried out on a multimarker (four mitochondrial and two nuclear genes) molecular dataset encompassing 63 {S}ciomesa specimens, 24 species belonging to other genera of {S}esamiina, and one representative of the sister subtribe {A}pameina. {T}his sampling also includes the three {M}alagasy species ({S}. betschi {V}iette, {S}. janthina {V}iette and {S}. oberthueri {V}iette) whose status is debated. {T}he resulting phylogenetic framework provides the most complete picture of the evolutionary relationships of the genus {S}ciomesa, and results of topological tests provide further support for removing {S}. betschi and {S}. janthina from the genus {S}ciomesa pending new combinations. {T}he results of molecular species delimitation analyses also overwhelmingly support the species status of the {S}ciomesa species sampled, even for {S}. mesophaea, a species with a very wide range in the {A}frotropics. {T}hese analyses also reveal the existence of up to three potential new species, whose status cannot be ascertained because the sequenced individuals were either extracted at a larval stage or correspond to specimens whose genitalia were not studied when their legs were collected.}, keywords = {integrative taxonomy ; molecular phylogenetics ; molecular species ; delimitation ; morphology ; taxonomy ; {ETHIOPIE} ; {KENYA} ; {OUGANDA} ; {AFRIQUE} {DU} {SUD} ; {CAMEROUN} ; {ZAMBIE} ; {MADAGASCAR} ; {BOTSWANA} ; {ERITRA} ; {TANZANIE} ; {ZAMBIE} ; {RWANDA} ; {REPUBLIQUE} {DEMOCRATIQUE} {DU} {CONGO}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}nnales de la {S}oci{\'e}t{\'e} {E}ntomologique de {F}rance}, volume = {61}, numero = {3}, pages = {179--232}, ISSN = {0037-9271}, year = {2025}, DOI = {10.1080/00379271.2025.2500960}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010094281}, }
