@article{fdi:010094191, title = {{P}hlebotomine sand flies ({D}iptera, {P}sychodidae) of the world}, author = {{G}alati, {E}. {A}. {B}. and de {A}ndrade, {A}. {J}. and {P}erveen, {F}. and {L}oyer, {M}. and {V}ongphayloth, {K}. and {R}andrianambinintsoa, {F}. {J}. and {P}rudhomme, {J}. and {R}ahola, {N}il and {A}khoundi, {M}. and {S}himabukuro, {P}. {H}. {F}. and {D}epaquit, {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground{C}hecklists of zoological groups are useful to document species names in a specific area or even worldwide. {T}hey serve for various purposes, including ecological studies, conservation reports, policy and decision-making, and species identification. {P}hlebotomine sand flies ({D}iptera, {P}sychodidae) are the vectors of pathogens such as {L}eishmania, {B}artonella and some arboviruses ({T}oscana, {N}aples, {S}icily), and checklists for sand flies have primarily been published mainly for a state, department, or country. {A} checklist for {A}merican sand flies was published in 2017, but, until then, no effort has been made to compile a comprehensive list of species worldwide. {T}he present study aims to fill this gap of knowledge.{M}ethods{T}he present checklist is provided based on a literature overview and biological collections records and includes unpublished data from the authors. {T}he species are presented according to the classification, then alphabetically by {E}astern and {W}estern {H}emispheres. {D}istribution by country and type locality of each species are provided. {D}iscussions on the taxonomic status or occurrence of each species are provided when needed.{R}esults{A} total of 23 genera in the {W}estern {H}emisphere, formerly the {N}ew {W}orld ({B}ichromomyia, {B}rumptomyia, {D}eanemyia, {D}ampfomyia, {E}dentomyia, {E}vandromyia, {E}xpapillata, {H}ertigia, {L}utzomyia, {M}artinsmyia, {M}icropygomyia, {M}igonemyia, {N}yssomyia, {O}ligodontomyia, {P}intomyia, {P}ressatia, {P}sathyromyia, {P}sychodopygus, {S}ciopemyia, {T}richophoromyia, {T}richopygomyia, {V}iannamyia, and {W}arileya) and 17 genera in the {E}astern {H}emisphere, formerly the {O}ld {W}orld ({A}ustralophlebotomus, {C}hinius, {D}emeillonius, {G}rassomyia, {I}diophlebotomus, {L}ibanophlebotomus, {L}ibanophlebotomites, {M}esophlebotomites, {P}aleomyia, {P}arvidens, {P}hlebotoiella, {P}hlebotomiella, {P}hlebotomites, {P}hlebotomus, {S}ergentomyia, {S}pelaeomyia, {S}pelaeophlebotomus), including the fossil species, are listed herein. {T}he updated list, excluding nomina dubia/species inquirenda includes 1063 sand fly species, with 549 and 514 species for {N}ew {W}orld and {O}ld {W}orld, respectively. {O}nly {N}ew {Z}ealand and the {P}acific {I}slands (excluding {N}ew {C}aledonia) do not record the presence of sand flies. {T}he dataset for this study is publicly available in the {S}i{BB}r and {GBIF}. {C}onclusions{T}his is the first detailed list of valid names of phlebotomine sand flies worldwide, including records from each country where they have been documented.}, keywords = {{G}eographical distribution ; {S}and flies ; {N}ew {W}orld ; {N}omenclature changes ; {O}ld {W}orld ; {T}axonomy ; {S}ystematics ; {W}orld fauna ; {MONDE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}arasites and {V}ectors}, volume = {18}, numero = {1}, pages = {220 [41 p.]}, ISSN = {1756-3305}, year = {2025}, DOI = {10.1186/s13071-025-06748-5}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010094191}, }
