@article{fdi:010094073, title = {{E}thnobotany of {A}crocomia aculeata ({J}acq.) {L}odd. ex {M}art. in two ecoregions of {C}olombia}, author = {{G}onzalez, {D}.{C}. and {T}ranbarger, {T}imothy and {I}saza, {C}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {A}crocomia aculeata is a multipurpose neotropical palm, widely distributed in {C}olombia with a large potential in the oil and food sector. {H}owever, its management and uses in the country are largely unknown. {T}herefore, the current study involves an ethnobotanical study on the use, management, and commercialization of {A}crocomia aculeata in two regions of {C}olombia, where wild populations are found. {M}aterials and {M}ethods: {P}articipant and non-participant observation sessions were conducted, along with semi-structured interviews with traders, processors, and consumers of palm, in 10 municipalities of {S}antander and {C}asanare, exploring harvesting methods, market characteristics, and uses of the palm. {R}esults: {I}n {C}asanare, nine categories were identified, while seven were noted in {S}antander, with human and animal food being the most prominent in both regions. {I}n {C}asanare, buds and fruits are harvested, whereas in {S}antander, only the fruits are collected. {P}rocessing is done using traditional artisanal methods, and the market is incipient and seasonal across the two regions. {I}n {C}asanare, the market is characterized by the offer of handicrafts and utilitarian objects (rings, fans, brooms, and hats), while in {S}antander, comprises food products derived from the fruit (fruits, chicha, and ice cream). {H}owever, a decline in usage was attributed to the depletion of the resource. {C}onclusions: {T}he study outlines the use and commercialization of {A}crocomia aculeata in {C}asanare and {S}antander, highlighting its cultural, social, and economic significance. {D}espite its considerable commercial potential, it is crucial to address the challenges related to use decline and resource depletion.}, keywords = {{COLOMBIE} ; {SANTANDER} {DEPARTEMENT} ; {CASANARE} {DEPARTEMENT}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}thnobotany {R}esearch and {A}pplications}, volume = {31}, numero = {}, pages = {16 [24 ]}, ISSN = {1547-3465}, year = {2025}, DOI = {10.32859/era.31.16.1-24}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010094073}, }
