@article{fdi:010093492, title = {{T}he fire regimes of the {C}errado and their changes through time}, author = {{S}egura-{G}arcia, {C}. and {A}lencar, {A}. and {A}rruda, {V}. {L}. {S}. and {B}auman, {D}avid and {S}ilva, {W}. and {C}onciani, {D}. {E}. and {O}liveras {M}enor, {I}mma}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {B}razilian {C}errado is a heterogeneous region of open ecosystems adapted to fire intermingled with patches of woody growth-forms, with high levels of biodiversity and endemism. {I}n recent decades, land conversion and human activities have proliferated across the {C}errado, losing about half of its original area. {T}hese changes, coupled with climate change, are altering its fire regimes with uncertain, but possibly adverse, consequences for {C}errado ecosystems. {H}ere, we used burned area data to characterize the fire regimes of each cell on a 30 km grid over the {C}errado, and used a spatially constrained hierarchical clustering approach to delineate the regions with different fire regimes in four consecutive 9-year periods between 1985 and 2020. {C}omparing the periods 1985-1993 and 2012-2020, we found substantial changes in the number and shape of the fire regime regions, and in their fire characteristics. {T}he main factor differentiating these regions was their level of fire activity: some showed large, numerous and frequent fires, while others showed small, few and infrequent fires. {W}e also identified a region in the north with a later peak of the fire season, characterized by small but numerous fires. {F}inally, we found that while the fire activity of the southern areas of the {C}errado substantially decreased, fire activity levels in the centre and north increased or remained high over time.{T}his article is part of the theme issue '{N}ovel fire regimes under climate changes and human influences: impacts, ecosystem responses and feedbacks'.}, keywords = {fire regimes ; open ecosystems ; disturbance ecology ; land use effects ; climate change ; {BRESIL}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}hilosophical {T}ransactions of the {R}oyal {S}ociety {B} : {B}iological {S}ciences}, volume = {380}, numero = {1924}, pages = {20230460 [15 p.]}, ISSN = {0962-8436}, year = {2025}, DOI = {10.1098/rstb.2023.0460}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010093492}, }
