@article{fdi:010093121, title = {"{B}ig data" research : a bibliometric analysis of the {S}copus database, 2009-2019}, author = {{C}havez, {H}enry and {A}lbornoz, {M}.{B}. and {M}artin, {F}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}copus-database publications containing the keyword 'big data' have skyrocketed from 30 (2009) to almost 16,000 (2019). {T}his trend reveals this field's importance across disciplines and contexts. {P}revious works have analysed the emergence and characteristics of scientific research on 'big data' but need updating. {W}e undertook a bibliometric analysis of over 73,000 such 2009-2019 publications. {T}his data helped to identify the primary trends, subjects, networks and institutions publishing on big data worldwide and explain the relations and differences between scientific communities working on this subject in central and peripheral countries. {F}urthermore, this research highlights {C}hinese researchers' and institutions' prominence in this field alongside the influence of {A}merican contributions, which are most frequently cited. {T}he emergence of dynamic poles of scientific production in middle-income countries in {A}sia, {A}frica and {S}outh {A}merica are also studied. {D}espite the dynamism of the field, about 2% of the articles account for 40% of the field's citations, while 42% have no citations. {O}riginating in computer science and engineering, big data research is increasingly becoming interdisciplinary. {K}eyword trends over time also show a shift from technical and prospective concerns towards (1) methodological and practical issues and (2) the development of {AI} and machine learning techniques. {T}hese indicators present differences between countries with varying geo-economic conditions. {C}ollaboration networks have rapidly grown with the {US} and {C}hina as the main nodes and {E}uropean countries as intermediaries in the circulation of this topic. {A}lthough still rare, there are some signs of {S}outh-{S}outh collaboration between {L}atin {A}merica, {A}frica and {A}sia.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {S}cientometric {R}esearch}, volume = {11}, numero = {1}, pages = {64--78}, ISSN = {2320-0057}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.5530/jscires.11.1.7}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010093121}, }
