@article{fdi:010092587, title = {{C}ontemporary decline in northern {I}ndian {O}cean primary production offset by rising atmospheric nitrogen deposition}, author = {{M}alsang, {M}. and {R}esplandy, {L}. and {B}opp, {L}. and {Z}hao, {Y}. {Y}. and {D}itkovsky, {S}. and {Y}ang, {F}. and {P}aulot, {F}. and {L}evy, {M}arina}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}ince 1980, atmospheric pollutants in {S}outh {A}sia and {I}ndia have dramatically increased in response to industrialization and agricultural development, enhancing the atmospheric deposition of anthropogenic nitrogen in the northern {I}ndian {O}cean and potentially promoting primary productivity. {C}oncurrently, ocean warming has increased stratification and limited the supply of nutrients supporting primary productivity. {H}ere, we examine the biogeochemical consequences of increasing anthropogenic atmospheric nitrogen deposition and contrast them with the counteracting effect of warming, using a regional ocean biogeochemical model of the northern {I}ndian {O}cean forced with atmospheric nitrogen deposition derived from an {E}arth {S}ystem {M}odel. {O}ur results suggest that the 60% recent increase in anthropogenic nitrogen deposition over the northern {I}ndian {O}cean provided external reactive nitrogen that only weakly enhanced primary production (+10 mg {C}.m-2.d-1.yr-1 in regions of intense deposition) and secondary production (+4 mg {C}.m-2.d-1.yr-1). {H}owever, we find that locally this enhancement can significantly offset the declining trend in primary production over the last four decades in the central {A}rabian {S}ea and western {B}ay of {B}engal, whose magnitude are up to -20 and -10 mg {C}.m-2.d-1.yr-1 respectively.}, keywords = {atmospheric deposition ; primary production ; export ; {I}ndian {O}cean ; biogeochemical cycling ; anthropogenic aerosols ; nutrients ; fertilization ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{F}rontiers in {M}arine {S}cience}, volume = {11}, numero = {}, pages = {1418634 [14 p.]}, year = {2024}, DOI = {10.3389/fmars.2024.1418634}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010092587}, }
