@article{fdi:010092581, title = {{L}ight-induced petrel groundings in {N}ew {C}aledonia}, author = {{B}orsa, {P}hilippe and {M}areschal, {J}. and {C}hartendrault, {V}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}his study aims to identify the petrel species affected by artificial light pollution in {N}ew {C}aledonia, describe the spatial and temporal patterns of light-induced groundings, and infer the factors involved. {T}he study took place across {G}rande {T}erre ({N}ew {C}aledonia's main island) from 2007 to 2009. {A} network of concerned citizens reported grounded seabirds. {L}ive grounded birds were rescued and released when possible, or euthanized. {G}roundings were mapped at the scales of both {G}rande {T}erre and {N}oum & eacute;a, the main city. {N}egative binomial regression was used to analyze the effects of light intensity and proximity to shore on the number of groundings. {O}f the 523 grounded seabirds recorded between 2007 and 2009, 80.2% were wedge-tailed shearwaters ({A}rdenna pacifica), 14.2% were {G}ould's petrels ({P}terodroma leucoptera), and 5.4% were {T}ahiti petrels ({P}seudobulweria rostrata). {C}ombining all three species, an estimated 64.9% of grounded individuals were fledglings. {G}roundings of {G}ould's petrels and wedge-tailed shearwaters peaked during their respective fledging seasons ({A}pril and {M}ay). {T}he number of lights and the proximity to shore were identified as highly significant positive factors explaining the number of groundings. {G}roundings were particularly numerous at industrial sites and airports. {M}ortality upon discovery or within days after exceeded 47.8% in the wedge-tailed shearwater, 35% in {G}ould's petrel, and 23% in the {T}ahiti petrel. {T}he results highlight the detrimental impact of outdoor artificial lighting on three petrel species breeding on {G}rande {T}erre, including the threatened {G}ould's petrel and the near-threatened {T}ahiti petrel. {T}hey provide evidence to support the urgent implementation of artificial light reduction policies at the periphery of {N}oum & eacute;a, around industrial sites, and near airports especially during the fledging periods.}, keywords = {{O}utdoor artificial lighting ; {U}rbanization ; industrial mining ; {W}edge-tailed shearwater ; {G}ould's petrel ; {T}ahiti petrel ; {C}onservation ; {C}itizen science ; {NOUVELLE} {CALEDONIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{Z}oological {S}tudies}, volume = {63}, numero = {}, pages = {59 [12 ]}, ISSN = {1021-5506}, year = {2024}, DOI = {10.6620/zs.2024.63-59}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010092581}, }
