@article{fdi:010092572, title = {{G}enetic analysis of the bacterial leaf streak pathogen responsible for severe rice infections in {S}enegal and identification of sources of resistance}, author = {{D}ossou, {A}. {B}. and {F}onc{\'e}ka, {D}. and {T}all, {H}. and {K}ane, {N}. {A}. and {F}aye, {O}. {N}. and {Z}oclanclounon, {Y}. {A}. {B}. and {H}utin, {M}athilde and {S}zurek, {B}oris and {O}naga, {G}. and {M}anneh, {B}. and {D}i{\'e}dhiou, {P}. {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}acterial leaf streak ({BLS}) caused by {X}anthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola ({X}oc) is a major bacterial disease affecting rice, wheat, triticale and {B}rassica crops. {I}t was recently confirmed in {S}enegal with high incidence in rice fields. {H}owever, the precise {X}oc strains responsible for the recent outbreaks remains unknown, and the sources of resistance to the growing disease pressure have yet to be identified. {I}n this study, we tested the pathogenicity of {X}oc strains collected from a 2023 epidemic in {S}enegal on {S}enegalese rice varieties and on near isogenic lines ({NIL}s) specifically developed for a sister pathovar, {X}anthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae ({X}oo). {W}e identified both local varieties and {NIL}s resistant to 80% of the strains. {H}owever, neither {NIL}s nor local varieties were resistant to {S}52-4-4, suggesting a significant mutation in this particular strain that poses a serious threat to rice production in {S}enegal. {C}omparative genomic and phylogenetic analysis revealed a close evolutionary relationship between {S}52-4-4 and pathogenic strains {BLS}256 and {CFBP}2286 from the {P}hilippines and {M}alaysia respectively. {M}oreover, the detection of an equivalent number of {TAL} effectors in both {S}52-4-4 and {BLS}256 provided further evidence that both strains have a shared common ancestry. {T}hese findings, together with the available genomic sequence and characterisation of {S}52-4-4 in this study are useful for studying {X}oc populations in {S}enegal and other countries. {N}onetheless, {S}52-4-4 adaptation to all local cultivars grown in {S}enegal requires a prompt management response.}, keywords = {bacterial leaf streak ; {S}enegal ; {TAL} effectors ; {X}a ; genes ; {X}anthomonas oryzae pv. ; {O}ryzicola ; {SENEGAL}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {P}hytopathology}, volume = {173}, numero = {1}, pages = {e70017 [11 p.]}, ISSN = {0931-1785}, year = {2025}, DOI = {10.1111/jph.70017}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010092572}, }
