@incollection{fdi:010092436, title = {{T}he unusual massive beaching of {S}argassum around {D}akar {P}eninsula ({S}enegal, {A}frica) in autumn 2022 : opportunity or threat [r{\'e}sum{\'e}]}, author = {{B}ousso, {N}.{C}. and {B}rehmer, {P}atrice and {S}tiger-{P}ouvreau, {V}. and {G}autier, {M}. and {K}ane, {C}. and {D}iop, {M}.{S}. and {F}aye, {M}. and {F}aye, {S}. and {B}ald{\'e}, {B}.{S}. and {S}onko, {A}. and {D}iedhiou, {F}. and {Q}uack, {B}. and {D}iadhiou, {H}.{D}. and {F}ricke, {A}. and {A}roui {B}oukbida, {H}anane and {W}einberger, {F}. and {N}diaye, {W}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{H}uge strandings of holopelagic {S}argassum along the {S}enegalese coast were observed throughout the summer of 2022. {T}he unusual nature of such stranding has mobilized the community, sparking questions from civic society and industrialists. {W}e report on this {S}argassum arrival to participate in a global scientific endeavour and to inform local stakeholders. {V}olunteers reported stranding from north to south of {S}enegal, harming the coastal life, including turtle fatalities. {W}e analyzed the stranded biomass for taxonomic identity and heavy metal concentrations ({A}s, {C}d, {P}b and {H}g). {W}e differentiated the {S}argassum collected into six morphotypes based on morphological details. {W}e noticed the presence of the species {S}. natans {I}, {S}. fluitans {III} and {S}. natans {VIII}. {C}hemical nuclear magnetic resonance ({HRMAS} {NMR}) fingerprintings were obtained to compare morphotypes and sampling sites. {I}n comparison to previous studies throughout the tropical {A}tlantic {O}cean, preliminary analyses revealed low quantities of arsenic and high concentrations of cadmium and mercury in the thalli. {F}or all these heavy metals except lead, the concentrations are higher in {S}. natans {I}. {A}rsenic concentrations were variable between sampling sites but lead and mercury concentrations were spatially homogeneous. {F}or agricultural purposes, the maximum values for {A}s and {C}d were above some recommended limits. {F}or animal feed, all {A}s concentrations were below the permissible level (40 ppm {EU}, {E}uropean {U}nion). {A}dditional analyses are underway to validate these first results and study the biochemical composition of the samples.}, keywords = {{SENEGAL} ; {DAKAR} {PENINSULE}}, booktitle = {{S}cientific opportunities for a global algal revolution}, numero = {}, pages = {278}, address = {{P}aris}, publisher = {{S}oci{\'e}t{\'e} {P}hycologique de {F}rance}, series = {}, year = {2023}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010092436}, }
