@article{fdi:010092242, title = {{E}volutionary and epidemiological insights from historical and modern genomes of {X}anthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola, the causal agent of bacterial leaf streak of rice}, author = {{H}utin, {M}athilde and {C}arpenter, {S}. and {B}aruah, {S}. and {C}ampos, {P}. and {B}oyer, {K}. and {A}ndriantsimialona, {D}. and {R}apanarivo, {S}. {H}. and {P}ruvost, {O}. and {B}ecker, {N}. and {G}agnevin, {L}. and {K}oebnik, {R}alf and {S}zurek, {B}oris and {K}oita, {O}. and {B}ogdanove, {A}. {J}. and {R}ieux, {A}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{X}anthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola ({X}oc) causes bacterial leaf streak ({BLS}) of rice. {T}his disease represents a major constraint for rice production, which is a crop feeding more than half of the world's population. {X}oc was first described in 1918 in the {P}hilippines and is prevalent in southeast {A}sia. {T}oday, {BLS} is also omnipresent in both {E}ast- and {W}est-{A}frica, where the disease was first reported in the early 1980s. {T}he appearance of {X}oc in {A}frica decades after its first report in {A}sia suggests that the disease could have been introduced from {A}sia to {A}frica. {S}trict conservation of five transcription activator-like ({TAL}) effectors in whole-genome sequences of 10 strains of {X}oc including three from {W}est-{A}frica and seven from {A}sia also support this hypothesis. {E}ast-{A}frica, especially {M}adagascar, where the disease was first described in 1985 is located at the interface between {A}sia and {A}frica, hence representing an interesting region to explore the link between strains from {A}sia and {W}est-{A}frica. {I}n this study, we did the following: (i) reconstructed the genome of a historical {X}oc strain from a herbarium specimen of rice showing symptoms of {BLS} that was sampled in {M}adagascar in 1931, 50 years before the first description of the disease, and (ii) sequenced nine new modern strains, including five from {M}adagascar and {E}ast-{A}frica. {T}he analysis of those new genomes along with previously published ones shed light within the evolutionary and epidemiological history of {X}oc.}, keywords = {ancient genomics ; avirulence factors ; bacterial dissemination routes ; bacterial leaf streak ; {X}anthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola ({X}oc)}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}olecular {P}lant-{M}icrobe {I}nteractions}, volume = {[{E}arly access]}, numero = {}, pages = {[5 p.]}, ISSN = {0894-0282}, year = {2024}, DOI = {10.1094/mpmi-05-24-0062-sc}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010092242}, }
