@article{fdi:010092229, title = {{G}aps and overlaps between sustainability science and the environmental humanities}, author = {{B}lanco, {J}ulien and {M}oreau, {C}. and {C}arri{\`e}re, {S}t{\'e}phanie {M}. and {F}ache, {E}lodie and {C}u{\'e} {R}io, {M}iriam and {C}alatayud, {F}. and {C}astella, {J}ean-{C}hristophe and {L}e {M}eur, {P}ierre-{Y}ves and {C}oudel, É and {H}erv{\'e}, {D}ominique and {M}{\'e}ral, {P}hilippe and {T}herville, {C}lara}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{G}iven the wicked environmental and sustainability challenges we face today, the need for a cross-disciplinary, science-society approach is increasingly undisputed. {Y}et, is the development of the distinct research fields of sustainability science ({S}ust{S}ci) and the environmental humanities ({E}nv{H}um) another example of academic silos? {I}n this study, we conducted a comprehensive science mapping of the literature to explore the overlap or compartmentalization of these fields. {S}tandardized search strings submitted in the {W}eb of {S}cience allowed us to gather a total of 2076 publications, including 1678 for {S}ust{S}ci and 398 for {E}nv{H}um, from which we explored the social, intellectual and conceptual structures of the two fields. {T}he results indicated that {S}ust{S}ci and {E}nv{H}um are nourished by distinct research communities (distinct authors and journals) and rely on different epistemological legacies. {I}n addition, results showed that the two research fields focus on similar challenges (e.g. climate change and biodiversity decline), but with contrasting approaches. {S}ust{S}ci combines natural and social sciences to address sustainability as a systemic problem, while {E}nv{H}um combines social sciences and the humanities, approaching it as a power and values issue. {N}onetheless, a comprehensive analysis suggested that they also share key aims: bridging the nature-culture divide, transforming socio-political relationships, and taking into account values, affects and imaginaries. {I}n light of these results, we finally discuss the opportunities and challenges for mutual enrichment between {S}ust{S}ci and {E}nv{H}um around these three shared goals, which might foster a strengthened response to the crises we face.}, keywords = {{A}nthropocene ; {I}nterdisciplinary approaches ; {H}uman-nature relationships ; {Q}uantitative review ; {S}cience mapping ; {S}cience-society interface ; {MONDE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{S}ustainability {S}cience}, volume = {[{E}arly access]}, numero = {}, pages = {[16 p.]}, ISSN = {1862-4065}, year = {2024}, DOI = {10.1007/s11625-024-01596-1}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010092229}, }
