@article{fdi:010092182, title = {{T}he {N}orthern {C}entral {A}ndes and {A}ndean tectonic evolution revisited : an integrated stratigraphic and structural model of three superimposed orogens}, author = {{B}aby, {P}atrice and {P}rudhomme, {A}. and {B}russet, {S}. and {R}obert, {A}. and {R}oddaz, {M}. and {C}alderon, {Y}. and {E}ude, {A}. and {G}il, {W}. and {H}ermoza, {W}. and {H}urtado, {C}. and {B}richau, {S}t{\'e}phanie and {C}alv{\`e}s, {G}. and {A}ntoine, {P}. {O}. and {S}alas-{G}ismondi, {R}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he mechanism for crustal thickening and superposition of several orogens is critical for understanding the growth of mountain ranges. {O}ur study focuses on a trans-orogen crustal cross-section to revisit the {A}ndean tectonic evolution in the {N}orthern {C}entral {A}ndes (5 degrees-8 degrees {S}). {I}t is based on a review of the geological setting, the definition of long-term tectono-sedimentary successions, and for the first time, a crustal balanced cross-section 895 km long through the entire orogen. {W}e show that the {N}orthern {C}entral {A}ndes were born in the {J}urassic, and correspond to the superposition of several orogens representing a minimum total shortening of similar to 207 km. {T}hey were built over 180 {M}a during three orogenic periods (180-140 {M}a; 100-50 {M}a; 30-0 {M}a), separated by two post-orogenic periods during which most {A}ndean relieves were erased (140-100 {M}a; 50-30 {M}a). {E}ach postorogenic period was recorded by 1) a major regional erosional unconformity sealed by a widespread marine transgression, and 2) extensional tectonics in the forearc. {C}rustal shortening was driven by westward {S}outh {A}merica {P}late displacement and continental crustal underthrusting, and not by oceanic subduction. {T}he propagation of the {A}ndean wedge has been controlled by successive inversions of two pre-existing rifts. {T}he sequential restoration of the trans-orogen balanced cross-section, constrained by the sedimentary record, provides a realistic picture of each orogenic and post-orogenic stage. {F}or the first time, the pre-{N}eogene basins are reconstructed respecting the {A}ndean shortening. {T}he first-order factors that have controlled the complex growth evolution of {N}orthern {C}entral {A}ndes are {S}outh {A}merica {P}late dynamics changes associated with shifts in the geometry of the subducting oceanic slab. {S}ome correlations can be established with {P}hanerozoic climate changes.}, keywords = {{A}ndean orogens ; {P}eru ; {C}rustal shortening ; {R}ifts inversions ; {S}equential restorations ; {PEROU} ; {ANDES}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}arth : {S}cience {R}eviews}, volume = {260}, numero = {}, pages = {104998 [21 p.]}, ISSN = {0012-8252}, year = {2025}, DOI = {10.1016/j.earscirev.2024.104998}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010092182}, }
