@article{fdi:010091947, title = {{G}enomic surveillance of virus in {B}enin}, author = {{Y}adouleton, {A}. and {N}ouatin, {O}. and {K}issira, {I}. and {H}oungbegnon, {P}. and {C}ottrell, {G}illes and {F}ievet, {N}adine and {S}ohou, {S}. and {B}utel, {C}hristelle and {S}errano, {L}aetitia and {G}uichet, {E}. and {V}idal, {N}icole and {D}elaporte, {E}. and {A}youba, {A}hidjo and {P}eeters, {M}artine and {M}assougbodji, {A}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{O}bjective: {D}engue is a widespread viral infection transmitted from mosquitoes to humans, mainly in tropical and subtropical climates. {I}n {B}enin, only dengue virus ({DENV}) serotype 2 infection has been previously described in humans. {T}his study aimed to investigate {DENV} infection and serotypes in suspected patients. {M}ethods: {P}lasma samples from 464 patients attending health centers in {F}ebruary 2023 with clinical symptoms and suspected for dengue infection were included, and analyzed for {DENV} by real time quantitative {P}olymerase {C}hain {R}eaction ({D}engue {A}ltona 3.0 kit). {PCR} positives samples were further characterized by whole genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis to identify the circulating {DENV} serotype. {R}esults: {T}he {RT}-q{PCR} results showed that four patients ({D}6, {D}23, {D}28, {D}44) were positive with the cycle threshold values less than 40 (31.3, 34.7, 14.7 and 14.3) respectively. {F}ull-length {DENV} sequences were obtained for {D}6, {D}28 and {D}44. {O}ne patient ({D}6) was infected with {DENV}-1 serotype, and the two others ({D}28 and {D}44) were positive for {DENV}-3. {P}hylogenetic analysis shows that the new {DENV}-1 sequence is close to those obtained in {B}urkina {F}aso in 2022 and {N}igeria in 2023, and the two {DENV}-3 sequences form a separate cluster with sequences obtained in {B}urkina {F}aso in 2022. {C}onclusion: {W}e showed for the first time, the presence of dengue serotype 1 and serotype 3 infection in {B}enin. {T}hese results send a strong signal to health authorities and show that arbovirus surveillance efforts must be integrated into pathogen monitoring programs.}, keywords = {{D}engue ; {W}hole genome sequencing ; {P}hylogenetic ; {S}erotype ; {BENIN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}nfection {G}enetics and {E}volution}, volume = {125}, numero = {}, pages = {105674 [6 p.]}, ISSN = {1567-1348}, year = {2024}, DOI = {10.1016/j.meegid.2024.105674}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010091947}, }
