@article{fdi:010091928, title = {{G}uadeloupe and {H}aiti's coffee genetic resources reflect the crop's regional and global history}, author = {{M}illet, {C}. {P}. and {D}elahaie, {B}. and {G}eorget, {F}. and {A}llinne, {C}. and {S}olano-{S}ánchez, {W}. and {Z}hang, {D}. {P}. and {J}eune, {W}. and {T}oniutti, {L}. and {P}oncet, {V}al{\'e}rie}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}ocietal {I}mpact {S}tatement {D}espite strong historical declines, {G}uadeloupe and {H}aiti's coffee sectors remain important to rural communities' livelihood and resilience. {C}offee also holds value as part of the islands' historical legacy and cultural identities. {F}urthermore, it is often grown in agroforestry systems providing important ecosystem services, which will become more important as these vulnerable islands work to adapt to a changing climate. {C}urrent efforts to revitalize coffee farms and target strategically important specialty markets would benefit from understanding existing genetic resources and the historical factors that shaped them. {O}ur study reveals the rich history reflected in current coffee stands on the islands.{S}ummary {T}he {W}est {I}ndies, particularly former {F}rench colonies like {H}aiti and {G}uadeloupe, were central to the spread of coffee in the {A}mericas. {T}he histories of these {I}slands are shared until the 19th century, where they diverged significantly. {S}till, both {I}slands experienced a strong decline in their coffee sector. {C}haracterizing the genetic and varietal diversity of their coffee resources and understanding historical factors shaping them can help support revitalization efforts. {T}o that end, we performed {K}ompetitve {A}llele-{S}pecific {PCR} ({KASP}) genotyping of 80 informative single nucleotide polymorphism ({SNP}) markers on field samples from across main coffee-growing region of {G}uadeloupe, and two historically important ones in {H}aiti, as well as 146 reference accessions from international collections. {W}e also compared bioclimatic variables from sampled geographic areas and searched for historical determinants of present coffee resources. {A}t least five {C}offea arabica varietal groups were found in {H}aiti, versus two in {G}uadeloupe, with admixed individuals in both. {T}he traditional {T}ypica variety is still present in both islands, growing across a variety of climatic environments. {W}e also found {C}offea canephora on both islands, with multiple likely origins, and identified {C}. liberica var. liberica in {G}uadeloupe. {T}hese differences are explained by the {I}slands' respective histories. {O}verall, {G}uadeloupe experienced fewer, but older introductions of non-{T}ypica coffee. {B}y contrast, several recent introductions have taken place in {H}aiti, driven by local and global factors and reflecting the history of {A}rabica varietal development and spread. {D}iversity on these islands is dynamic, and our results reveal opportunities and limits to the future of {G}uadeloupean and {H}aitian coffee. {M}algr{\'e} un fort d{\'e}clin historique, les fili{\`e}res caf{\'e}i{\`e}res guadeloup{\'e}enne et h{\¨ie}tienne font partie int{\'e}grante de la vitalit{\'e} {\'e}conomique des communaut{\'e}s rurales, de l'identit{\'e} culturelle et du patrimoine historique de ces {\^i}les. {D}e plus, les caf{\'e}iers y sont g{\'e}n{\'e}ralement cultiv{\'e}s dans des syst{\`e}mes agroforestiers fournissant de nombreux services {\'e}cosyst{\'e}miques, et qui seront des leviers d'adaptation aux changements climatiques. {L}a caract{\'e}risation des ressources g{\'e}n{\'e}tiques caf{\'e}i{\`e}res de ces {\^i}les (et des facteurs historiques les ayant fa{\c{c}}onn{\'e}es) appuieront les tentatives de revitalisation de la caf{\'e}iculture. {C}ette {\'e}tude met en lumi{\`e}re les nombreuses mutations historiques qui se refl{\`e}tent dans la composition des peuplements de caf{\'e}iers actuels.}, keywords = {agrobiodiversity ; {A}rabica ; coffee ; {G}uadeloupe ; {H}aiti ; historical determinants ; {T}ypica ; varietal diversity ; {HAITI} ; {GUADELOUPE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}lants {P}eople {P}lanet}, volume = {[{E}arly access]}, numero = {}, pages = {[18 p.]}, year = {2024}, DOI = {10.1002/ppp3.10584}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010091928}, }
