@article{fdi:010091849, title = {{D}istribution, habitats, phenology and conservation of {N}ew {C}aledonian {O}donata}, author = {{G}rand, {D}. and {M}arinov, {M}. and {J}ourdan, {H}erv{\'e} and {C}ook, {C}. and {R}ouys, {S}. and {M}ille, {C}. and {T}heuerkauf, {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{C}ompared to other archipelagos of the {P}acific, the {N}ew {C}aledonian {O}donata fauna is rich and diverse with 56 valid species or subspecies (23 endemics, 41%) from eight families (four {Z}ygoptera: {A}rgiolestidae, {C}oenagrionidae, {I}sostictidae, {L}estidae, and four {A}nisoptera: {A}eshnidae, {C}orduliidae, {S}ynthemistidae, {L}ibellulidae) and 31 genera (including four endemics, 13%). {I}n {Z}ygoptera, we record 19 species including 12 endemics (63%), and among {A}nisoptera, we record 37 species or subspecies, including 11 endemics (30%). {W}e removed five species from the list that had been erroneously recorded as occurring in {N}ew {C}aledonia: {T}ramea carolina ({L}innaeus, 1763), {A}ustroargiolestes icteromelas ({S}elys-{L}ongchamps, 1862), {I}schnura torresiana {T}illyard, 1913, {X}iphiagrion cyanomelas {S}elys-{L}ongchamps, 1876 and {H}emicordulia oceanica {S}elys-{L}ongchamps, 1871. {T}he occurrence of {T}ramea limbata ({D}esjardins, 1835) appears also doubtful, but we were unable to clarify to which taxon this record referred hence we excluded it from our update. {F}rom a biogeographic perspective, the {N}ew {C}aledonian fauna has mostly {A}ustralian affinities with some connections with southeast {A}sia and the {P}acific region. {W}e provide for each species, whenever information was available, a distribution map with a brief review of its known ecology, behaviour and phenology. {W}e also evaluated each species' conservation status, in light of known threats (range restriction, scarcity and human activity including altered water flow). {W}e consider seventeen species (30%) endangered. {T}he most immediate threats concern water pollution including alteration to the flow of water courses caused by mining, deforestation and fires. {I}nvasive species, such as alien fish, may be predators of concern for odonata larva, although this has not yet been proven in {N}ew {C}aledonia.}, keywords = {{O}donata ; distribution ; endemism ; conservation ; threats ; {NOUVELLE} {CALEDONIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{Z}ootaxa}, volume = {4640}, numero = {1}, pages = {1--112}, ISSN = {1175-5326}, year = {2019}, DOI = {10.11646/zootaxa.4640.1}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010091849}, }
