@article{fdi:010091772, title = {{I}nformal care time and costs of dementia care in {B}enin ({W}est {A}frica)}, author = {{M}alaha, {A}. {K}. and {T}h{\'e}baut, {C}. and {H}ouinato, {D}. {S}. and {G}ansou, {G}. {M}. and {G}nonlonfoun, {D}. {D}. and {A}doukonou, {T}. and {P}reux, {P}. {M}. and {G}uerchet, {M}a{\¨e}lenn}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {D}ementia is a growing global health challenge, with significant socioeconomic implications. {T}his study examined the informal care duration and related costs along with the total cost of care for older individuals with dementia in {B}enin, {W}est {A}frica, providing insights into a region with limited dementia research. {M}ethods: {W}e conducted a cost-of-illness study in {B}enin. {B}oth hospital and community recruitments were used to enroll adults aged >= 60 years and their primary caregivers. {S}tructured questionnaire and validated tools were used to collect the demographic, clinical, healthcare resource utilization data as well as informal care duration. {R}eplacement costs approach was performed to valuate informal care time. {O}fficial exchange rates from the {W}orld {B}ank were used to convert costs from local currency to purchasing power parities dollars ({PPP}$). {R}esults: {D}ata from 135 individuals with varying dementia stages revealed that dementia places substantial caregiving demands, predominantly on women who provide up to 8 h of daily care. {I}n 2021, the mean annual cost of dementia care was estimated to be {PPP}$ 2,399.66 +/- 2,057.07. {I}nformal care represented a significant portion of dementia expenses, up to 92% of the total care costs in this study. {D}iscussion: {P}olicy interventions are urgently needed to address the dementia care challenges in {B}enin, especially because economic transitions and educational advancements may reduce the availability of informal caregivers. {T}his emphasizes the vital role of informal caregivers and underscores the need of implementing dementia policies to support families facing the evolving challenges of dementia care.}, keywords = {{D}ementia ; {B}urden ; {C}ost-of-illness ; {I}nformal care ; {A}frica ; {BENIN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{N}euroepidemiology}, volume = {[{E}arly access]}, numero = {}, pages = {en ligne [11 ]}, ISSN = {0251-5350}, year = {2024}, DOI = {10.1159/000538262}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010091772}, }
