@article{fdi:010091561, title = {{R}eviewing the science on 50 years of conservation : knowledge production biases and lessons for practice}, author = {{D}awson, {N}.{M}. and {C}oolsaet, {B}. and {B}hardwaj, {A}. and {B}rown, {D}. and {L}liso, {B}. and {L}oos, {J}. and {M}annocci, {L}aura and {M}artin, {A}. and {O}liva, {M}. and {P}ascual, {U}. and {S}herpa, {P}. and {W}orsdell, {T}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{D}rawing on 662 studies from 102 countries, we present a systematic review of published empirical studies about site-level biodiversity conservation initiated between 1970 and 2019. {W}ithin this sample, we find that knowledge production about the {G}lobal {S}outh is largely produced by researchers in the {G}lobal {N}orth, implying a neocolonial power dynamic. {W}e also find evidence of bias in reported ecological outcomes linked to lack of independence in scientific studies, serving to uphold narratives about who should lead conservation. {W}e explore relationships in the sample studies between conservation initiative types, the extent of {I}ndigenous {P}eoples' and local communities' influence in governance, and reported social and ecological outcomes. {F}indings reveal positive ecological and social outcomes are strongly associated with higher levels of influence of {I}ndigenous {P}eoples and local communities and their institutions, implying equity in conservation practice should be advanced not only for moral reasons, but because it can enhance conservation effectiveness.}, keywords = {{MONDE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}mbio}, volume = {53}, numero = {}, pages = {1395--1413}, ISSN = {0044-7447}, year = {2024}, DOI = {10.1007/s13280-024-02049-w}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010091561}, }
