({S}apotaceae)]. {T}he last larval stages ({L}4 and {L}5) of this insect are harvested and used as food and in a lesser extent, as feed in {S}outhwest of {B}urkina {F}aso. {H}owever, the distribution and density of {C}. butyrospermi edible caterpillar have not yet been investigated in {S}outhwest of {B}urkina {F}aso. {T}he objective of this work is to evaluate the density and damage of shea caterpillars in the shea parklands located along the {K}oumbia-{D}ano environmental and ethnical transect, during three consecutive shea caterpillar seasons (2020, 2021 and 2022). {T}he density of individuals/square meter of shea leaves of each of the five larval stages, including dead larvae, was evaluated on the sampled shea trees. {T}he infestation rate and the severity of defoliation were also investigated. {T}he density of edible larval stages ({L}4 and {L}5) ranged from 2.95 +/- 3.35 to 29.50 +/- 25.49 individuals/m2 of shea leaves according to the study sites and the year. {T}he percentage of shea tree infested with caterpillars and the attack severity varied from 35.57 to 57.50% and from 8.71 to 25.50%, respectively, depending on the study sites and the year. {F}urther investigation is necessary to determine the cause of the larvae mortality and the reasons for the heterogeneous distribution of {C}. butyrospermi along the transect.}, keywords = {{E}dible insects ; {S}hea tree ; {L}arval stages ; {D}ensity ; {B}urkina {F}aso ; {BURKINA} {FASO}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}nternational {J}ournal of {T}ropical {I}nsect {S}cience}, volume = {[{E}arly access]}, numero = {}, pages = {[11 p.]}, ISSN = {1742-7584}, year = {2024}, DOI = {10.1007/s42690-024-01366-7}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010091400}, }
