@article{fdi:010091297, title = {{S}patial variability of temperature inside atoll lagoons assessed with {L}andsat-8 satellite imagery}, author = {{V}an {W}ynsberge, {S}. and {Q}u{\'e}r{\'e}, {R}. and {A}ndr{\'e}fou{\¨e}t, {S}erge and {A}utret, {E}. and {L}e {G}endre, {R}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}ea {S}urface {T}emperature ({SST}) maps are necessary for managing marine resources in a climate change context, but are lacking for most of the 598 world's atolls. {W}e assessed the feasibility of using the {L}andsat-8 ({L}8) satellite to infer {SST} maps for four {F}rench {P}olynesia atolls of aquaculture interest in {T}uamotu {A}rchipelago, namely {T}akaroa, {R}aroia, {T}atakoto, and {R}eao. {S}pecifically, we (1) used sensors to measure in situ the range of spatial temperature differences recorded in these four atoll lagoons; (2) calibrated and assessed the performances of {SST} algorithms to estimate lagoon temperature from {L}8 signals; (3) generated temperature maps for the lagoons and compared spatial patterns of temperature obtained from these maps with patterns highlighted by in situ sensors. {G}ood agreements between satellite and in situ temperature data were obtained, with better results achieved when using an atoll-by-atoll optimization (average bias = -0.26 degrees {C}; {RMSE} = 0.55 degrees {C}). {H}owever, we also show that the range of temperature inside atoll lagoons is low, and of the same order of magnitude than {RMSE} achieved with {SST} algorithms. {B}ecause of the {L}8 overpass time (similar to 9 a.m.) and the revisit time (16 days), {L}8 {SST} could not capture the entire range of spatial differences measured in situ in the four lagoons, but could capture spatial gradients and fronts better than with few in situ sensors. {C}onsidering the achieved accuracies and the actual temperature differences at the four study sites, we discuss the usefulness of {L}8 derived {SST} maps to assist fishery and aquaculture management in atoll lagoons, as well as the possible generalization to other lagoons.}, keywords = {{L}andsat ; {S}ea surface temperature ; {C}oral reefs ; {A}quaculture ; {F}isheries ; {POLYNESIE} {FRANCAISE} ; {TUAMOTU}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{R}emote {S}ensing {A}pplications : {S}ociety and {E}nvironment}, volume = {36}, numero = {}, pages = {101340 [15 p.]}, ISSN = {2352-9385}, year = {2024}, DOI = {10.1016/j.rsase.2024.101340}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010091297}, }
