@article{fdi:010091212, title = {{E}xploring traditional cosmetic flora from {C}omoros islands : an ethnobotanical survey in {M}ayotte}, author = {{D}aroueche, {O}. and {D}imassi, {A}. and {B}ertrand, {C}. and {C}hassagne, {F}ran{\c{c}}ois}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{M}ayotte is located in the {I}ndian {O}cean and is home to more than five languages, cultures and lifestyles. {H}owever, due to rapid urbanization, this traditional knowledge is at risk of extinction. {M}oreover, ethnobotanical studies on the pharmacopoeia and cosmetopoeia in {M}ayotte are almost nonexistent. {T}his study was carried out to document the traditional knowledge of {M}ayotte's cosmetopoeia. {T}he main objective of this study was to document the diversity of cosmetic plants used by the {M}ahoran community. {W}e conducted field surveys from 2021 to 2022 in 14 communes of "{G}rande {T}erre", the largest of the two islands from {M}ayotte. {A} total of 35 experts (fundi) were interviewed in this study. {I}ndividual interviews with {M}ahoran informants using open questions were conducted, and voucher specimens were collected for each plant species cited. {A} total of 470 cosmetic formulations, representing a total of 1777 {UR}s, were recorded. {E}ach formulation contains 1 to 13 ingredients, with a predominance of single-ingredient recipes. {I}n particular, hygiene, makeup, fragrance, hair and nails, and dermatology are the most cited cosmetic categories. {A} total of 83 plant species were identified and the five most cited plant species were, in decreasing order: {C}ocos nucifera (273 {UR}s), {J}asminum nummulariifolium (191 {UR}s), {O}cimum spp. (120 {UR}s), {C}urcuma longa (105 {UR}s), and {L}awsonia inermis (101 {UR}s). {T}his study is one of the first to focus solely on the exploration of cosmetopoeia in {M}ayotte, contributing to the preservation of knowledge and the promotion of customs related to traditional cosmetics on this island. {F}urther studies should be performed on some highly cited plant species endemic to the area (e.g., {J}asminum nummulariifolium, {P}andanus maximus) to confirm their interest for the cosmetic industry and thus contribute to the economic growth of {M}ahoran people.}, keywords = {{C}osmetopoeia ; {M}ahoran flora ; {P}lants ; {A}frica ; {F}ield survey ; {MAYOTTE} ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN} {ILES}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{H}eliyon}, volume = {10}, numero = {15}, pages = {e35322 [23 p.]}, year = {2024}, DOI = {10.1016/j.heliyon.2024.e35322}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010091212}, }
