@article{fdi:010091189, title = {{P}hylogenetic systematics of {V}igna sensu stricto in the context of {P}hysostigma and allies}, author = {{H}orton, {D}. {M}. and {F}eleke, {Y}. and {P}asquet, {R}{\'e}my and {J}avadi, {F}. and {M}elville, {K}. {A}. and {D}elgado-{S}alinas, {A}. and {T}hulin, {M}. and {M}ithen, {R}. {F}. and {G}epts, {P}. and {E}gan, {A}. {N}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{P}remise: {V}igna includes economically vital crops and wild species. {M}olecular systematic studies of {V}igna species resulted in generic segregates of many {N}ew {W}orld ({NW}) species. {H}owever, limited {O}ld {W}orld ({OW}) sampling left questions regarding inter- and intraspecific relationships in {V}igna s.s. {M}ethods: {A}frican species, including the putative sister genus {P}hysostigma, were comprehensively sampled within the context of {NW} relatives. {M}aximum likelihood and {B}ayesian inference analyses of the chloroplast mat{K}-trn{K} and nuclear ribosomal {ITS}/5.8 {S} ({ITS}) {DNA} regions were undertaken to resolve {OW} {V}igna taxonomic questions. {D}ivergence dates were estimated using {BEAST} to date key nodes in the phylogeny. {R}esults: {A}nalyses of mat{K} and {ITS} data supported five clades of {V}igna s.s.: subg. {L}asiospron, a reduced subg. {V}igna, subg. {H}aydonia, subg. {C}eratotropis, an enlarged subg. {P}lectrotropis, and a clade including {V}. kirkii and {V}. stenophylla. {G}enome size estimates of 601 {M}b for {V}. kirkii are near the overall mean of the genus, whereas {V}. stenophylla had a larger genome (810 {M}b), similar to some {V}igna subg. {C}eratotropis or {P}lectrotropis species. {C}onclusions: {F}ormer subg. {V}igna is reduced to yellow- and blue-flowered species and subg. {P}lectrotropis is enlarged to mostly all white-, pink-, and purple-flowered species. {T}he age of the split between {NW} and {OW} {V}igna lineages is similar to 6-7 {M}yr. {G}enome size estimates cannot rule out a polyploid or hybrid origin for {V}. stenophylla, potentially involving extinct lineage ancestors of {V}igna subg. {C}eratotropis or {P}lectrotropis, as indicated by network and phylogenetic analyses. {T}axonomic revisions are suggested based on these results.}, keywords = {{B}ayesian inference ; {F}abaceae ; genome size estimation ; {L}eguminosae ; network analysis ; phylogenetic systematics ; {P}hysostigma ; taxonomy ; {V}igna ; {MONDE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}merican {J}ournal of {B}otany}, volume = {[{E}arly access]}, numero = {}, pages = {[20 p.]}, ISSN = {0002-9122}, year = {2024}, DOI = {10.1002/ajb2.16381}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010091189}, }
